Visas
There are plenty of types of visas. Let's take a look at them one by one.
Short-term visa
Certain nationals can travel to the Czech Republic visa-free. During this stay, however, one cannot do any profitable activities; the main purpose of such trips is leisure. The full list of countries can be found here. The stay can never exceed 90 days within any180 day period. Once your 90 days are used up, you must leave the Schengen area.

The nationals who are not on the list must obtain a short-term visa via the Czech embassy in their home country prior to their trip. There are many purposes of short-term visa: tourism, medical treatment, business, culture, sports, visiting family/friends, official invitation, study, even employment. Each visa purpose has different requirement as to documents that must be submitted.

When traveling to the Czech Republic on a short-term visa with the purpose of employment, one must also obtain a work permit.
Long-term visa
Long-term visas are for trips over 90 days. This type of visa is valid for one year. It can be extended or swapped for a long–term residence permit. It is issued in the form of a visa sticker placed in your passport. There are various purposes:

Bridge visa - proof of ongoing application
The application for a long-term visa is submitted via the Czech embassy in your home country. Some nationals are allowed to submit the application at any Czech embassy abroad. The list of such nationals to be found here. Extensions can be submitted in the Czech Republic at the Ministry of Interior, at the department for foreigners. Bridge visa is in most cases obtained also via the Ministry of Interior.
Business trip visa
