Non-EU nationals

FOREIGN POLICE REGISTRATION

Anyone moving to the Czech Republic must register their arrival with the Foreign Police within three days from the date of entry. This can be skipped if you are staying in a hotel. The registration must be done at the relevant Foreign Police according to your address.

Long-term residence permits are for stays longer than 90 days and are valid for up to two years. They are issued in the form of a biometric card. 

If you are a close family member of an EU national who has permanent residency, you may apply after for permanent residency after two years. It is valid for 10 years and can be extended. It is issued in the form of a biometric card.

Short-term visas are for trips up to 90 days. They cannot be extended, only in urgent cases where the foreigner cannot leave the country (covid infection, injury and similar). It is issued in the form of a visa sticker placed in your passport.

Permanent residency is usually obtained after a certain period of living in the Czech Republic - most commonly 5 years. It is valid for 10 years and can be extended. It is issued in the form of a biometric card.

A permit for non-EU family members of EU nationals. This is the best type of permit for non-EU nationals as it grants free access to the Czech labour market.

Long-term visas are for trips over 90 days. This type of visa is valid for one year. It can be extended or swapped for a long–term residence permit. It is issued in the form of a visa sticker placed in your passport.

An employee card (or work visa) is a long-term residence permit for stays over 90 days for the purpose of employment. 
The employee card is valid for up to two years, but can be shortened in accordance with the Employment contract.

Blue card (or work visa) is a type of Long-term residence permit for stays over 90 days for the purpose of Employment of highly educated foreigners (holders of at least Bachelor degree) who will earn at least 1.5x of the average Czech salary (approx. CZK 57,000 in 2022). It is issued in the form of a biometric card.

EU nationals

EU nationals do not need any visa or work permit in order to stay in the Czech Republic, however they can obtain the optional Registration certificate (formerly known as Temporary residence permit) as a proof of  stay in the Czech Republic. 

The permit is issued in the form of a paper confirmation and is valid for 10 years.

Permanent residency is usually obtained after a certain period of living in the Czech Republic; most commonly 5 years. It is valid for10 years and can be extended. It is issued in the form of a paper booklet the size of a passport.
