There are multiple ways how to obtain tickets for the public transport in Prague. As it may seem a bit overwhelming, here is a little summary of all the types.

PRAGUE PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Public transport in Prague is a convenient and efficient way to get around the city. The system is operated by the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) and includes buses, trams, and metro lines.
The metro system is the backbone of the Prague public transport network. It consists of three lines (A, B, and C) that cover the city center and suburbs. The metro operates from around 5 am until midnight every day, with extended hours on weekends and holidays.
The tram system is another important part of the Prague public transport network. It covers most of the city and runs from early morning until midnight. Trams are a great way to get around Prague, especially if you want to see the sights or explore the city at a slower pace.
Buses are the third mode of public transport in Prague. They are less common than trams and metro, but still provide an important service, especially in the suburbs. Some buses run 24 hours a day, making them a useful option for those traveling late at night or early in the morning.
TICKETS TYPES
PAPER TICKETS
Probably the easiest way how to obtain a public transport ticket is to purchase a paper ticket. Such can be obtained from tobacco shop/newsstand, ticket machines (located in all metro stations), directly on board of some trams/buses/info centres.
MOBILE-APP TICKETS
A very convenient way how to purchase tickets is also through the mobile app PID Lítačka (App store, Google play store). This app - which is in English too - is easy to operate. One can simply select the desired ticket and purchase it directly in the app.
In the app directly, one can also apply and purchase the long-term passes (monthly, 3 months or yearly). It is the easiest way of obtaining these. When inspectors show up, you simply show your ticket on the phone. The inspectors should carry chargers with them, in case you run out of battery. If you happen to forget your phone at home, simply claim you have the ticket - you will only get a small fine for not having it, once you prove to the PID office you really do.

SMS TICKETS
You can also purchase short-term tickets by sending a text message to 902 06 with the desired price as a text of the message. The ticket then arrives back as a text message.

PLASTIC TRANSPORTATION CARD
The long-term tickets can also be purchased in a form of plastic identification card. It can be purchased only in the official public transport shops (usually in metro stops) or in the Customer centre at the address Jungmannova 35/29, Praha 1 - Nové Město. It can be applied for online and then collected in one of the shops, or applied for in person. Note that it can take up to 30 days to receive the card and it is much faster to do the process in the public transport app instead.
